Basic Information

Pride and Prejudice was first published in 1813 and it was and still it is Jane Austen’s most popular novel. The book mainly portrays the life of rural society in the regency era to concentrate later on the interactions of two characters: Elizabet Bennet and Mr. Darcy. The first version of this novel was actually written before, during 176-1797 under another title and it’s said that it was probably in the form of letters that were being exchanged.

Title

The first title Jane Austen had in the mind wasn’t Pride and Prejudice, but in fact “First Impressions”. We can see how this comes to be by the main stream of the content of the novel. Every problem for our main female and male role is in fact: first impressions which went wrongly. Both, first Darcy, who looks at Elizabeth as “not handsome enough” and then Elizabeth’s who is hurt by those words, and equally prideful person, listens to the wrong gossip coming to hate him. But in the end the title that is chosen is what it is because of lead roles: Elizabeth’s Pride and Darcy’s Prejudice.
